Giraffes welcomed visitors to discuss how to stay safe and thought carefully about what might be unsafe behaviour.  The session was delivered sensitively and carefully: the aim was to raise awareness of the risks of child exploitation.

Groundbreaking Greeks

Image
Giraffes class started our unit, Groundbreaking Greeks, learning that there are six periods in ancient Greek history, from the Minoan civilisation c3000 BC to the end of the Hellenistic period in 30 BC. In pairs or small groups, the children chose one of these periods to research and they created a presentation to teach others about their findings.

The Giraffes got a last-minute opportunity to take part in the Cross Country event run by the High Peak School & Sport Partnership. They did also had opportunity to have a go at golf and football. Their running really was incredible and Taddington Giraffes won medals galore for the race as well as for their perseverance and attitude.

Mycenaean Pottery

Giraffes continue looking at Ancient Greek civilisations, now looking at the Mycenaeans. We looked at how the Mycenaeans took over the Minoan civilization and how they were influenced by aspects of their culture. We learnt that the Mycenaeans were skilled potters, who frequently used spirals and pictures of marine life in their work. We learnt that they developed ‘kraters’, which were containers used for mixing wine and water; ‘alabastrons’, which were short and sturdy jars for holding perfumes; and tall goblets. The children chose one of these types of pot, using pictures of Mycenaean pots that have been found by archaeologists for inspiration. We learnt how to mould a pinch pot and how to build our designs by attaching coils, scoring the clay and using ‘slip’ to help bind the clay.
