Teaching and Learning Ambassadors - Cake and calculations

Image
Our Teaching and Learning Ambassadors did a great job in organising the Cake and calculations event today.  They had several meetings with Mrs Williams to organise the event. They made posters,   asked class teachers to put out a carousel of calculation activities and invited parents to come and see the methods, maths equipment and models and images we use in our maths lessons.  They also asked parents, staff and friends of school to donate cakes and then buy them back at the coffee morning, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

We are scientists: using a newton meter

In science, we learned that mass is the amount of matter that an object contains and weight is a measure of gravitational force measured in newtons. We used a force meter to record the mass and weight of different classroom objects.

Maths: concrete, pictorial and abstract

We often ask children to show us 3 ways in maths using concrete apparatus, pictorial representations and in an abstract way. Here we are investigating place value with counters, place value grids and digits. We have also been using part-whole models and number lines .

Can you feel the force? Gravity

Image
In science, we investigated gravity, by carrying out 4 tasks. We learned about Galileo Galilei and Sir Issac Newton : two scientists who made key discoveries about the force of gravity. Galileo’s experiment proved that objects of the same shape accelerate toward Earth at the same rate, no matter their mass. We particularly liked re-creating  his experiment, by dropping 2 bottles from height, although we were disappointed that we couldn't go to the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy like he did!

Tints, tones and shades

Image
We began our  Art project, by  exploring mixing tints, shades and tones. We reviewed each others work to evaluate how successfully we had mixed the colours. Following on from this, we looked at colour in landscapes, discussing where we thought the artist had used tints, tones or shades. We chose a landscape to study in more detail. We worked hard to carefully  mix and record the colours  - not an easy task.  We then discussed vocabulary and added annotations to describe each colour and the overall effects of the use of colour in the painting.  At the end of the session, we evaluated each other's work. Look what a fabulous job we did!
