Christingles 🍊

Image
A Christingle is made from an orange, four small sticks, sweets and a candle and is used by Christians to celebrate Jesus as the Light of the World. Each part the the Christingle has an important meaning: the candle represents Jesus as the Light of the world, the four sticks represent the four seasons, the ribbon represents the blood of Jesus, the sweets represent the fruits of the Earth and the orange represents the world.  Today we had a special visit from Olwen and James from the village to support the children making their own Christingle ready for the Christingle service in church on Thursday. The children had a lovely time!

Mental Health Ambassadors

Image
On Tuesday, the mental health ambassadors, Leah and Will, went to join Health Championships in preparation for children's mental health week. We looked at the 5 ways to well-being which are CONNECT, BE ACTIVE,  TAKE NOTICE, GIVE and KEEP LEARNING.  They took part in a range of activities such as a yoga session, discussion with a sleep expert and meeting the I-vengers team who focus on internet safety.  During mental health week, Leah and Will will take a leading role in organising a whole school assembly and a Five ways to well-being workshop.

Science exploration. What happens if...?

Image
In science, Giraffes used their knowledge of circuits to help them devise and test out What happens if...? questions.  Working with others, we decided on a question to investigate before making a prediction about what would happen. We used the skills we learnt in the last lesson , to draw a diagram of the investigation, noted the results and made a conclusion.  Some of our questions. What happens to the brightness of the bulb, if I add another cell? What happens to the sound of the buzzer if I change the length of the wires? What happens to the brightness of the bulb if I add another bulb? What happens to the

Internet Safety

Image
On Tuesday afternoon, the Infants and Juniors joined together and split into 3 groups to explore Internet Safety. The children each visited 3 workshops. The children discussed how they use the internet; sites they visit, games they play and things that they watch. From these discussions, we then explored problems that may be encountered, such as unknown people 'befriending' them, age restrictions on certain games as well as inappropriate content appearing when searching the web. The children know that they should always tell a trusted adult if anything that they see when using the internet makes them feel uncomfortable or worried.  The children listened and discussed the story- 'The Magic window' where a girl had access to a magic window where she could discovered lots of wonderful things. However one day she saw something that made her feel upset. The girl didn't know what to do about it until eventually she discussed it with a special grown up. We discussed how t

Drawing circuit diagrams

Image
Our new topic is Electrical circuits and components.  By the end of this unit we aim to apply our  knowledge to design and make programmable home devices. We will be using the programming skills we are developing in computing lessons. We wanted to find out how to draw electrical circuits  We had to work out which symbol matched the component.  We already remembered quite a lot about electricity from our work in Y3 and Y 4, so we were able to build on that knowledge.   Here are some of our circuit diagrams.
