Palm Sunday

Giraffes have been investigating the events of Palm Sunday.

We explored Matthew 21:1-11.

As Jesus and his followers appraoched Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives. From there Jesus sent two of his followers and said to them, “Go to the town you can see there. When you enter it, you will quickly find a donkey tied there with her colt beside her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone asks you why you are taking the donkeys, say that the Master needs them, and he will send them at once.” Matthew 21:1–3

There were two donkeys.

We wondered ...How did he know that the donkey would be there? Had he arranged this? Or did he just know?

This was to bring about what the prophet had said: “Tell the people of Jerusalem,     ‘Your king is coming to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey, on the colt of a donkey.’” Matthew 21:4–5

Jesus usually walked wherever he went.

The prophecy came true.

The donkey wasn't grand like a horse. Jesus wasn't showing off.

The followers went and did what Jesus told them to do. They brought the donkey and the colt to Jesus and laid their coats on them, and Jesus sat on them. Matthew 21:6–7

The disciples did what they were told.

Jesus sat on the coats.

Many people spread their coats on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The people were walking ahead of Jesus and behind him, shouting,“Hosanna to the Son of David! “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”  Praise to God in heaven!” Matthew 21:8–9

They were very happy to see him. on a donkey. They thought he was their saviour.
They lay coats and branches down. It's a bit like a red carpet for someone important.
We noticed that Matthew didn't mention palm branches.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was thrown into uproar. The people asked, “Who is this man?” The crowd said, “This man is Jesus, the prophet from the town of Nazareth in Galilee.” Matthew 21:10–11

Some people are happy to see him, but some are not.

We folded strips of paper to make palm crosses. It was quite tricky, but we got there in the end!
