Heading off to Fairytale land

Heading off to Fairytale land,  watching  snippets from the film Shrek, we spotted a wealth of fairytale characters and creatures. 

We also gathered a large selection of fairytales from the library and classrooms. 

Using these, we discussed features of fairytales including characters, settings and themes.
We sorted them into venn diagrams looking for similarities and differences. 



Following this, we had the big reveal of our new book... Drumroll please.... for the The Sleeper and the Spindle by Neil Gaiman. Immediately spotting similarities with Sleeping Beauty, we can’t wait to read this modern fairytale.

What if I told you ... that there was no Prince Charming or knights in shining armour? With a sleeping plague sweeping through the land, will there will be a happily ever after?

Here we go !  We arrived safely and met our course leader, Ben, who will be with us for the 3 days.  The first activity was orienteering, which was a good chance to explore the grounds while looking  for the markers.  We were all hungry and ready for lunch after all that running around.

We were excited to see our t ents. Luckily, they are spacious (room for six) as some of us have brought a lot of luggage!  It was quite hot inside. After some time to unpack, there was time to relax, play and explore the sports hall, games room and the adjoining field - perfect for a game of football!  After all that activity,  we were ready for tea -   a lovely roast.  Our evening activity was another opportunity to use our map reading skills -  a walk in the evening sunshine.  There were lots of cows in adjoining fields,  which were thoroughly analysed by our knowledgeable farmers!  When we got back we had hot chocolate and it was time for bed.

We are historians: the Xia Dynasty

Many historians debate whether the Yellow Emperor, and the later Xia Dynasty,  ever existed. Some believe that their stories are legends that paint a picture of the  perfect king, warn against corrupt leadership and explain the origins of the Chinese  dynasties. Others believe that they actually existed and archaeological finds could  provide the proof.  We explored these ancient legends together through drama. Over 4700 years ago, a tribal system existed in prehistoric China.
