Nice try! Rugby fun

The Giraffes were super excited this morning as, not only was it the first day back, but we were off out for a sporting afternoon  with Miss Furness.

After an early lunch, we set off on the trip to Glossop Rugby Club, where we met up with children from the other schools. We weren't sure what to expect -some of us hadn't played a lot of rugby and some of the other teams looked quite professional in their school sports kit -  but we were ready to give it a go.

After being introduced to the coaches, we had a warm up to get us ready for action. We had to pass the ball around and then score a TRY or pass in different ways. It was very fast-paced and we had a job to keep up! We were feeling quite worn out already and we hadn't really got started yet!

Our first session was skills, led by an ex-professional rugby player. He had lots of tips and showed us some new moves and passes. He was very encouraging and made us feel like we could all do this!

After this, we had our first match. We were one person short for our team, so we borrowed a child from Dove to help us out, as they had too many for their team. She was very friendly and we all worked together. The coach was  really enthusiastic and kept stopping the game to teach us as we went along. We had our top sprinters to set off with the ball and our support to back them up. After a few close calls, we finally managed to score our first TRY!

We had a final coaching sessions where we played our own mini-game and we got lots more coaching tips, which filled us with confidence and our skills improved a lot. We learned a lot of rugby skills -how to pass in different ways, to go forward, attack space and use support.  We also succeeded in using a lot of our school values - working together, not giving up, being respectful- all while having fun!

We had a very enjoyable afternoon. I am very pleased that I was able to come along with you. I am  also v
ery grateful to the map reader and the in-car-entertainment - you know who you are!
