How do animals stay warm?

In topic on Monday, we were investigating the way in which animals adapt to the cold climate. We looked at blubber as a thermal insulation.

The children worked in groups. They submerged their hands in icy water wearing rubber gloves recording how long it too for their hands to feel the cold. They tested different techniques such as inflating their glove to create a layer of air and smearing a thick layer of lard over the glove.

The children found that air and fat both insulate the body and keep animals warm!
