Science - human growth and development

Image
Giraffes have continued their work on the stages of growth and development in humans . This week, they were focusing on changes in old age.  We talked about what we thought we knew about changes in old age, bringing in some prior knowledge of older people that we know. After looking at the facts, we realised that some of out initial ideas weren't quite right.  We decided to make posters to inform people of the things they can do to help them stay healthy in later life.  One of the things we can do now is to look after our teeth, so hopefully we will still have them all our life.   Using Canva, we combined text and images to create our posters.

Egyptian Role-play

Image
On Monday, Leopards and Giraffes had a go at re-enacting the day of the ancient Egyptian Queen's funeral. They imagined they had entered the tomb for the first time and that they had to sacrifice themselves to join her in the afterlife.

Writing a sequel

Image
Having finished reading the Sleeper and the Spindle, by  Neil Gaiman, Giraffes have been inspired to plan a sequel as the queen goes off on her next adventure. Show don't tell They have thought carefully about how the want to portray each character to the reader , so after deciding their characteristics, they have considered how the character would behave towards others and how they would speak. Dynamic dialogue Knowing that dialogue should be only be used to show character or move the action on , they have been considering carefully what their characters might say to create dynamic dialogue with no boring bits!   Magical tales Inspired by other fairy tales, they plan to include dragons, goblins, enchanted forests as well as links to other fairy tales - with their own twist to create their own magical tales.  Fantastic first drafts started...  I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Writing in role

Image
Giraffes have been busy writing in role as part of their work on The Sleeper and the Spindle. As estate agents, we wrote adverts for the castle in the Forest of Acaire using noun phrases, prepositions and persuasive language. In role as the queen, we considered whether to return home to get married to the Prince, or to carry on with another adventure. Unfortunately for the Prince, the decision was not in his favour! We are writing letters to explain the decision using formal language, passive voice and the subjunctive.
